Glass fiber composition classification:A-glass, C-glass, E-glass, ECR-glass, High silica, S-glass
1. Definition of glass fiber
Glass fiber is an inorganic non-metallic material made of glass marbles through high-temperature melting, drawing and cooling. It has a filamentous structure and is characterized by light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance and strong insulation. It is one of the most common reinforcing materials in modern composite materials.
2. Classification by composition differences
According to different chemical compositions, glass fiber is divided into multiple categories such as E-glass, C-glass, ECR-glass, S-glass , and high silica glass fiber. Each category is adapted to different process and application requirements.
A-Glass (High Alkali)
High alkali glass fiber is cheap, but has a high alkali content, weak water and chemical resistance, and poor mechanical properties. It is mainly used in non-structural fields such as insulation cotton, filling materials, and decorative panels. Due to its high environmental pollution, it is rarely used in structural products. Mainstream manufacturers such as CPIC, Jushi, and Taishan do not promote this type of glass fiber.
C‑Glass (Chemical‑resistant)
C-glass fiber has good acid and alkali corrosion resistance and strong chemical resistance. It is mainly suitable for chemical tank lining, chopped strand mat and needle-punched mat for acid and alkali corrosion environment. The glass marble factory of Chengdu Changyuanshun Industrial Co., Ltd. is one of the largest glass marble factories in China, with an annual output of more than 100,000 tons. Our products are of excellent quality and are quality controlled in accordance with ISO 9002 standards. The C glass marbles we produce are widely used in the field of chemical corrosion protection.
E‑Glass (Electric‑style)
E-glass fiber has excellent mechanical and electrical insulation properties and is the mainstream product in the composite material industry. It is widely used in wind turbine blades, profiles, boats, electronic insulation and other fields. At present, the hot-selling products in China include CPIC's E‑Glass series yarns, Taishan Fiberglass's E‑Glass type chopped strand mats, and Chengdu Changyuanshun CYS-E321 spray up roving.
ECR-Glass (Environmentally friendly corrosion-resistant E-Glass)
The production of ECR-glass fiber is based on E-glass fiber, reducing or excluding boron, and improving acid and alkali environment resistance.
It is often widely used in chemical equipment, storage tanks, anti-corrosion pipelines, and environmentally friendly structural parts.
High Silica (High Silica Type)
The silica content in high-silica glass fiber is ≥96%, which can withstand 900-1100℃ for a long time, with excellent thermal stability and fire resistance. This product is mostly used in metallurgical insulation layers, aerospace high-temperature protection, fire-fighting equipment, high-temperature insulation felt, etc. It can also be used in the military field. At present, Chengdu Changyuanshun has launched a variety of high-silica products, and high-silica yarn, cloth, and mat are all available.
S-Glass (High Strength Type)
The tensile strength and modulus of high-strength glass fiber are significantly higher than those of E-glass fiber, and it has excellent esistance and high temperature performance.
It is commonly used in aerospace, wind power, high-performance sports equipment, and structural profiles. At present, China Jushi has high-strength and high-modulus direct yarn products, and Taishan Fiberglass is also developing special high-strength fiberglass products.
3.Selection suggestions
When choosing the type of glass fiber, it is necessary to comprehensively consider multiple factors such as the resin system, process method, and use environment. If you pursue cost-effectiveness and conventional reinforcement, give priority to E-glass fiber, such as wind turbine blades, FRP pipes, profiles, etc. If the product is exposed to acid and alkali environment for a long time, it is recommended to choose ECR-glass fiber. If high temperature and heat resistance are required, choose high-silica glass fiber for fireproof clothing, thermal insulation pads, metallurgical fire curtains, etc. If there are extremely high requirements for tensile strength and elastic modulus, high-strength types can be considered. In addition, although some old processes or special applications still use C-glass fibers, their market share is gradually declining.
4.Summary
As the basic material for composite reinforcement, glass fiber has clear classification and mature performance, but different types of glass fibers have obvious differences in process adaptation and performance. In the selection process, enterprises are advised to combine product structure, resin system, and use environment to give full play to the reinforcing effect of glass fiber and ensure the balance between performance and cost of composite products.
